Fate of senior high football program to be decided today

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

— Decatur athletics director Bobby King said Monday that a decision regarding the Decatur High School football season will likely be made Thursday morning.

King attended football practice Monday morning and said the Bulldogs had seven players participating, up from five whoattended last Tuesday's practice.

King said he's going to give the program until Wednesday afternoon's practice to see how many committed players the Bulldogs have. King said he would like to have a minimum of 15 players. Last week head football coach Bill Brockert said the program needed 13 players.

King said if the program does not have suff icient numbers by Wednesday, "then I'm going to have to pull the trigger" on canceling the varsity football season for 2009.

"We'll just see what happens," King said. "I hate (the situation). I hate it with a passion, but we just can't keep dragging on. We've got toomany people involved based on my decision."

King said he met with parents on Monday and explained the district's position. King then said at least two parents took Monday off from work to go around the Decatur area and recruit players for the Bulldogs.

Decatur finished 1-9 last season with 19 players on the roster.
