CONWAY - J.W. Hiland was born October 18, 1943, in McRae, Ark., thethird child of Arthur Materson Hiland and Eureka McCoy Hiland. He grew up in Scotland, Ark., and Conway, Ark., where he developed lifelong passions for reading, learning, hunting, fishing, dogs, baseball (especiallythe St. Louis Cardinals), country music, and crossword puzzles. Hewas very intelligent and a self-described "dreamer," avidly reading everything he could find that was not a school text book. He attended one year of college on a work scholarship, but one day, when he was shooting pool instead of studying, an acquaintance suggested that they join the Navy on the buddy system. Alas, his buddy didn't pass the entrance exams, but J.W. scored in the top five percent nationwide and was given his choice of assignments. He chose aircraft mechanics and quickly rose to the highest grade in his specialty and traveled to Italy, Newfoundland, and Memphis, Tenn.

While in Memphis, he went on a blind date with Linda Doris Kidd. He said that she had "the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen" and that meeting her was the best thing that ever happened to him. They were married February 18, 1966, and moved back to Conway shortly thereafter. They had three children and remained happily married untilher death in 1997.

J.W. worked for Southwestern Bell from 1968 until his retirement in 1999. He enjoyed his work because there was always something new to learn and he got to be outdoors while doing it. He was very good at his work, and in 1982, he was proud to be on the team that installed the first fiber-optic cable in Arkansas. He made many long-lasting friends at work, and he and his family greatly appreciate their care and support.

After retirement, he moved to Hot Springs, Ark., to be closer to friends, including his long-time best friend Jimmy Jones and new companion Mary Fortner Collier. While there, he continued to enjoy fishing and hunting. He claimed a reduced animosity toward deer and fish from his younger days, although we suspect that he may have finally accepted his limited proficiency at those activities. Either way, he always demonstrated a deep appreciation and reverence for nature. He also enjoyed working in his shop and on his land, and eagerly anticipated the many visits from friends and family - especially his grandchildren.

In the later years of his life, he learned to let go of his gruff exterior and let everyone see the loving, caring person that those closest to him knew was there all along. In 2008, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and moved back to Conway to be closer to family. Although it was occasionally difficult, we are grateful for some very special times with him in the last year, and we are appreciative of the physicians who helped make that possible. J.W. died in peace and comfort, surrounded by his loving family in Conway, on August 17, 2009.

J.W. was preceded in death by: Eureka McCoy Hiland (mother), Arthur Materson Hiland (father), Linda Doris Kidd Hiland (wife), Mary Fortner Collier (companion), Meta Hiland Johnson (sister), Ouida Hiland Earney (sister), and Billye Hiland Palmer (sister).

J.W. is survived by: Betty Lou Hiland Pike (sister) and Ivan Dean Pike (brother-in-law); Mary Ann Hiland Parish (sister) and Glen Dale Parish (brother-in-law); James Arthur Hiland (brother) and Kay Edwards Hiland (sister-in-law); Matteson Wade Hiland (son), Tonya Evans Hiland (daughter-in-law) andEvan Matteson Hiland (grandson); Kelly Dawn Hiland Riggs (daughter) and Kenneth Riggs (son-in-law); Jennifer Jaye Hiland Chism (daughter), Jessica Chism (granddaughter), Julie Chism (granddaughter) and Josie Chism (granddaughter); Jimmy Charles Jones (friend); and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends whom he dearly loved and who will remember him fondly and for a long time. Oh - and Bo and Rascal and Allie (granddogs).

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 20, 2009, at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway, 501-327-7727. A reception for family and friends will be held afterwards at the home of Glen and Mary Ann Parish, 3120 Windsong Lane, in Conway.
