Council Talks About Insurance, Officers, Stimulus Money

— At the recent City Council Committee of the Whole meeting the group continued discussion of insurance for the Kindley House which houses the Historical Museum. The discussion will continue when final appraisals are completed as to cost to insure the building and contents.

Police Chief Trent Morrison said he needs to hire additional part time help since one officer has retired, one has quit, one is recovering from injury and two are returning to the schools as resource officers.

Activity reports were presented from the library, streets and utilities. No report was received from the fire department.

Junior Hartley, director of city services and public works, reported the new water tower should be completed by Nov. 20. Jason Steele is offering the city and school antennas on the new cell tower recently erected. Hartley said he is researching for possible stimulus money to repair old leaky water lines. He reported funds have been received for 42 steps in Old Town Park and additional funds will be used to add a sidewalk from the parking lot to the steps, handrails for steps and a recognition plaque for donors.

The Council heard a city request the city research the possibility of setting a maximum limit on water bills for senior citizens over age 65.

The Mayor instituted a centralized purchasing system and office supplies will be distributed to departments as needed. It was reported Mt. Pleasant will give a 10% discount on automotive repair charge.
