Lawsuit Filed Against City

— The City of Gravette is facing a lawsuit filed by Eugene Sawkill, City Attorney Tom Smith has informed the Gravette City Council.

The lawsuit, filed in Federal Court, alleges Sawkill was unlawfully terminated as a city employee, Smith told the Council.

Smith recommended the city retain legal counsel from the Arkansas Municipal League to defend the suit.

The attorney’s remarks came during a meeting in which the Councilapproved a resolution supporting the Gravette Historical Museum Commission’s application for a grant from the state. If approved the funds would aid in construction of a complementary building adjacent the Kindley House Museum.

The project has been in the discussion stage for several months.

Also during the special meeting, the Council spent more than an hour in discussions concerning the city’s 2010 budget.
