Decatur teachers celebrate success

— Teachers at Northside Elementary school received T-shirts from the Decatur Education Foundation as a reward for the hard work they did to raise the school’s math and literacy scores.

Northside Elementary was put on alert status for its low literacy and math scores two years ago. Math scores were improved the first year, and literacy scores were also improved but fell less than one percentage point below the required score.

Last year, however, literacy scores were improved more than 21 percent, bringing the school well above the state’s requirements and earning them improvement status.

The Decatur Education Foundation bought the T-shirts for teachers to celebrate the achievement. The black T-shirts have metallic gold and silver letters that proclaim “The best teachers work at Northside Elementary School.”

“The teachers, staff and students at Northside Elementary appreciate the dedication and support from the Education Foundation. We truly appreciate it,” principal Leslie Sharp said.
