Flu shots given at schools

Shots run short for teacher vaccinations

— Students in the Decatur High School were the first in Benton County to receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccinations on Monday.

Children at the Northside Elementary School received their vaccines on Tuesday.

The district was allotted 300 H1N1 flu vaccinations and 300 seasonal flu vaccinations — enough for all the students whose parents had signed consent forms, according to school nurse Jackee Eaton.

Both the inactivated injectable form and the live virus nasal spray form of the H1N1 vaccine were available.

There were not enough vaccinations for all of the school staff. Teachers and classified staff had to draw for the chance to get a seasonal flu vaccine. H1N1 flu vaccines were not available to staff.

Six students and two teachers from the Northwest Arkansas Community College were on hand to help administer the vaccines, along with several Parent Teacher Organization members to help keep the process organized.

Two Decatur firefighters were also present in case there were any reactions to the immunizations.
