GRAVETTE — She doesn't support a proposal that would repeal the law that set up the state lottery, said state Rep. Mary Lou Slinkard, Gravette.

The Arkansas Legislative Council recently referred a proposal for an interim study on a repeal proposal to the State Agencies Committee, of which Slinkard is a member.

The proposal is by state Sen. Sue Madison of Fayetteville.

After the study, Madison wants to bring before the Arkansas Legislature, set for a regular meeting beginning in February 2010, her proposal to repeal legislation setting up the Arkansas Lottery Commis

sion.

Slinkard said she doubts that most Arkansans want to see changes in the law so soon after its approval.

"I guess I personally.... don't think the repeal will go anywhere, just because people voted on (the lottery)," she said.

Backed by Lt. Gov. Bill Halter and others, the Arkansas state lottery is dedicated to providing education scholarships.

The lottery was approved by voters in 2008. During the 2009 state legislative session, Arkansas lawmakers passed enabling and other legislation for the lottery.

Since then, the lottery's director and other top lottery officials have had criticism over getting high pay.

In any case, the lottery was approved by Arkansas voters and should be tried and given a chance to work, Slinkard said.

"They have taken a lot of hits," she said. "I think it's just, it being new and everything, and the people voted for it."
