Variance granted for child care

— Planning and zoning committee members voted, at their Sept. 22 meeting, to grant Laura Wright a variance allowing her to operate a child care business in her home located at 1037 Eubanks Street.

Currently, Wright has eight children in her care. She told committee members that she is working on getting a state license so she can keep 13 to 15 children in her home.

Wright said state officials have alreadyvisited her home and everything has been "okayed." Getting a variance from the city to allow her to operate a business in a residentially-zoned area is her next step in obtaining a license.

Wright told the committee that she has 15 years of childcare experience, including four years as the assistant director for Decatur Care for Kids, and one year as director. Wright said the state would inspect her day care every six months after she received the license.

"I have no problems with it myself," committee chairman Trip Lapham said, "I wish you the best of luck."
