Students do independent projects in Quest program

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

— In conjunction with Quest, the gifted and talented program, Gentry Middle School students have taken their studies one step beyond and worked on independent projects related to their classroom work.

With help from their classroom teachers, students chose a topic which interested them and was related to what they were studying in class and used free time to research the topic further. They then make a presentation to their classmates on what they had learned. Presentations included posters, scale models, Web sites, PowerPoint and educational games, in addition to the normal report.

Cindy Coronado, in her science class, studied water flow and put together a stream table kit to demonstrate how water moves.

Sydney Hodges and Lexie West made a study of space in their scienceclass and put together a game show and a Web site, Questie.yolasite.com.

Mallory Morris also studied space in her science class and made a presentation board of her study of Neptune, the sun and the earth.

Lauren Little used her knowledge of Mars to make a PowerPoint presentation to show her whole science class.

Brandi Murphy and Samantha Curran made a study of China and presented both a scrapbook and a crossword puzzle to their social studies class.

Individual projects allowed students to pursue individual interests related to classroom instruction and share their enthusiasm with their classmates.
