— Students from Gravette High School SkillsUSA student organization competed on April 13-14 in the Arkansas SkillsUSA Leadership & Skills Championships held at the Convention Center in Hot Springs. SkillsUSA is a United States career and technical student organization serving more than 307,000 high schools, college students and professional members enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations.

“Champions at Work - Connecting the Opportunities”, the theme of this year’s competition, hosted more than 2,100 students this year and competition winners will advance to the 46th National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City in June.

The highlight of this year’s trip was April Abiera, a sophomore who competed, won first place and a gold medal in the “Prepared Speech” competition. She will represent Gravette High School and the State of Arkansas at Nationals in Kansas City.

Other students competing on the “Opening and Closing Emblem Ceremonies Team” were Shelby Newell, Hailey Morrison, Chris Crose, Amy Riles, Michael Young, Samantha VanOtterloo and Sarah Galyean. Rebekkah Richardson competed in the “Job Interview Contest”.

Students winning the honorable “Arkansas Statesman’s Award” were Instructor and SkillsUSA Sponsor Leonard Garside, April Abiera, Samantha VanOtterloo, Hailey Morrison and Amy Riles.

“We are very proud of each of these student participants and would like to wish April Abiera ‘best of luck’ at Nationals!,” Garside said.
