The Maysville E. H. Club met at the Community Center April 22. Sylvia Tucker was hostess for the meal. There was a great variety of delicious foods.

The business meeting began at 1 p.m. Melinda Crawley led the song, “Singin’ in the Rain”. We pledged allegiance to the U. S. flag. Jewel Lukens read a poem entitled “It’s You”. It explained that when you talk about “the church” you are talking about yourself.

Sylvia gave the lesson on phytochemicals. They are substances found naturally in plant foods including fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and teas. They work with the vitamins, minerals and plant food to prevent disease and promote health. They reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, blindness and slow the aging process. A good source of phytochemicals is carrots, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, corn, watermelons and kiwi fruit. She handed out recipes and instructions for handling various kinds of berries and had us taste a sample of strawberry preserves. She gave a tip for keeping berries - store unwashed berries in the refrigerator and wash them just before you eat them. Wet berries will mold in the refrigerator. Toremove Jell-O easily from the container moisten the dish and rub with butter first, then fill with Jell-O.

Ten members answered roll call by telling what they always plant in a garden.

Katherine Tucker has a broken hip and could not attend the meeting so Sylvia read the minutes and took notes of the business. She reported on the uses of the building. Bert Ballman reported a leak in the roof or other parts of the building and said that it would be taken care of. Also that more dirt was needed over the septic tank to level it.

Two new bulletin boards have been bought and installed. It was voted to invite the county club to meet here for a fun day in July.

We discussed a fundraiser to help on the purchase of playground equipment. Watch for more information on this soon.

The quarter package was drawn by Bert and furnished by Katherine.

The next meeting will be May 27. Melinda Crawley will give the lesson and cultural art. Marty Steward will be hostess.

For those of you who wish to use the community building for family gatherings please call Sylvia Tucker, 479-291-4542 to reserve a date.
