Runaway trailer ends up in window of Decatur building

— A small trailer ran through the front glass window of a vacant store on Main Street Friday morning after it came loose from the vehicle towing it.

Hector Carrillo was driving a Penske moving truck south on Arkansas Highway 59 and pulling a car dolly, according to a police report. When Carrillo rounded the sharp corner in front of the Simmons Foods Inc. offices, the car dolly separated from the truck, crossed the oncoming lane of traffic and ran over a highway sign before embedding itself in the front glass window of the former NAPA Auto Parts store.

According to the police report, it is unknown why the car dolly came loose from the truck.

“Upon inspection of the car-dolly hitch, the safety pin and the hitch latch were in the proper position,” the report states.

Building owner Tim Witcher said this is not the first time a vehicle has run into his buildings along Highway 59. Witcher said he was thankful there was no oncoming traffic or pedestrians along the highway.

“It could have been worse, somebody could have been hurt or killed,” he said.
