Money approved for roof repair

— Roofing repair was approved by the city council for a portion of library roof damaged in a winter windstorm.

As a result of strong winds in January and February, a portion of the library’s skylight fell on the roof and punched a hole in the roofing material, causing a leak, Gentry Mayor Wes Hogue said at the Aug. 2 city council meeting.

Rather than attempting to fix the leak by repairing only a portion of the section of roof, the council approved $3,000 to repair the entire section.

The matter was brought to the council because available money in the library maintenance line item was insufficient to cover the repair. Additional money will come from undesignated incoming tax revenue, Hogue said.

In a related matter, Hogue reported that the recent installation of a new thermostat system in the library was resulting in savings in utility costs. He said the library had only used 30 percent of its utilities budget at the end of June.

Hogue anticipated the savings from the new thermostats could be as high as $2,000 by the end of the year.
