Board requests no open polls

— There will be no school election for Gravette school district next month if a request by the Gravette School Board is honored by the County Election Commission.

Since no millage increase or change are requested and since incumbent Dan Yates has no opposition in his filing for a second five-year term, the Board requested that no polling places be opened, which spares the district the cost of the election.

This action has been taken several times when no millage change or contested races occurred.

Other business at the regular meeting of the Gravette School Board Monday evening basically was routine and was disposed of in slightly more than an hour.

Included were reports from various departments, introduction of new faculty members, and a construction report for the new field house and middle school music complex.

Fourteen new faculty members were introduced by building principals — eight at the high school, four at Glenn Duffy Elementary, and one each at the middle school and upper elementary school.

Angie Scott, instructor for the Medical Occupations department, presented a brief Power-Point video which outlined the success of her students in state and national competition.

Athletic director Norman Mitchell presented a budget report for his department; Board member Jack Skillett explained an upcoming “Arts in the Park” project involving the art, music and drama departments at GHS; and Jared Brown, representing Nabholz Construction, reported only minor cleanup work is necessary for the new field house and music complex facilities.

Elementary Principal Zane Vanderpool explained the Arkansas Leadership Academy “Deep Knowledge Team Institute” sessions which several elementary faculty members attended during the past year.

The board okayed the disposition of two used buses, discussed and voted for the 2011 fiscal year budget (which will be outlined in a future report) and transferred $100,000 to the building fund line item.

Following a 15 minute executive session, the board okayed the resignation of one employee and approved several transfers for employees.

The board adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
