Off the Cuff

Time to attend the county fair

This is another busy week following last week’s preparations for Gravette Day and the well attended and enjoyed celebration on Saturday.

This week, August 18-22, the annual Benton County Fair will be held at the almost-new fairgrounds located at Vaughn. This is a marked change from the September dates that were the tradition for as long as I can remember ... like forever.

Rainy weather last year coupled with a disappointing carnival, which is a special highlight for the kids, were two of the determining factors in making the change. Also, the fair has struggled in its new location because folks find it hard to get used to that change.

A great carnival, the one which serves the Tulsa State Fair, has been secured, according to Tim Craig, chairman of the Fair Board. He and the other governing board members are hopeful the fair will turn around this year and again become Arkansas’ leading county fair. Make plans to attend.

Another big event this week is the start of school on Thursday, August 19. It seems school starts earlier and earlier as new state and sometimes federal regulations are required to be met. At any rate, this year’s term starts Thursday and everyone — everyone who drives a vehicle — is encouraged, urged, to be extra careful, especially during these first few days of school.

The traffic jams will subside somewhat in the weeks ahead as kids, parents, teachers, et al settle into the routine.

This is one of those space filler “Cuffs.” If you’re not reading it, it wasn’t needed. Next time I’ll probably rant and rave a bit about something ... or other.
