Local students accepted to ASMSA

Six Benton County students have been accepted to attend the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts as members of the class of 2012.

Local students who were accepted are: April Abiera of Gravette, daughter of Lisa and Michael Abiera; Avery Charles of Gravette, daughter of Heather Severson; Karen Shelton of Pea Ridge, granddaughter of Ronald and Elizabeth Shelton; Heather Cooper of Gentry, daughter of Ann Hancock and Thomas Cooper.

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts is one of 14 public residential high schools in the country specializing in the education of academically gifted juniors and seniors. The graduating class of 2010 earned $10.5 million in scholarships. The school, located in historic downtown Hot Springs, is a campus of the University of Arkansas system.

The new school year started Aug. 9.
