GHS art students parody famous "American Gothic" painting

— Students in Mollie Hendricks’ Art-2 class at Gravette High School are shown with an assignment they completed earlier this year: creating a parody of American artist Grant Woods’ famous painting “American Gothic”.

The results of the sophomore, junior and senior class students showed a broad range of imagination and interpretation, Hendricks said.

Woods’ 1930 oil on beaver board propelled the Iowa artist to fame and his familiar painting is one of the mostrecognized in the world. It depicts a farm couple, with pitchfork, standing in front of a typical rural home of the depression era.

It’s one of the most reproduced and parodied images of the classic couple and the Gravette students’ work displays creativity by early twenty-first century youth.

Other work shown in no particular order is by students Katie Hobbs, Silas Rogers, Devin Crose, Tyler Greenhaw, Daniel Dalton, Skylar Rogers, James Williams, Zach Walker and Taylor Kean. The paintings have been on display in the exhibit room adjacent the GHS Commons for several weeks.
