Gentry boys and girls teams bring home wins from Danville Tourney

— Both Gentry Boys and Girls basketball teams brought home wins from tournament action Monday night at Danville as the Pioneers toppled England 53-42 and the Lady Pioneers outmuscled Booneville 54-32.

In the girls game, Gentry overcame a slow start as Booneville ended the first quarter on top 13-12. But Gentry quickly recovered to take a one-point lead at half-time 21-20, and then coasted to the victory by outscoring their opponents 16-5 in the third period and17-7 in the final quarter.

Terra Jones topped all scorers with 18 points, including 10 of 13 free throws. Loren Cripps hit the boards with 15 points and Tara Arnold added 8. Courtney Millsap had 4, Kendra Boyd 3, and Shelby Hammond, Destiny Thomas, and Kaylin Cripps each added 2.

Boys’ Action

The Pioneers came out with a 21 point first quarter as they stormed over England’s 10 points. Leading 35-20 at half-time, the Pioneers had a brief letdown in the third periodbut came back in the last quarter to take the 53-42 win.

Kevin Scherer led all scorers with 14 points; Colby Bryant had 11 and Joe Morris 10. Brent Dowdy added 6; Justin Bryant 4; Chris Wiand and Austin Millsap, 3 apiece and Dylan Adler 2.

Farmington Games

The Pioneers and Lady Pioneers traveled to Farmington last Friday and though both fought hard, the host teams took both matches; the boys dropping the 76-58 decision and the girls coming upon the short end of a 55-44 game.

In boys action, Joe Morris topped scoring with an impressive 23 points; Kevin Scherer had 18; Justin Bryant 10 and Brent Dowdy added 5.

In the girls game, Farmington jumped to a 12-3 first quarter lead which the Lady Pioneers were never able to overcome.

Terra Jones paced Gentry with 18 points; Courtney Millsap had 9; Linay Walker 3; Shelby Hammond, Destiny Thomas and Kaylin Cripps 2 apiece and Courtney Folker added a free throw.
