Shiloh Christian overwhelms Gentry

— Shiloh Christian girls basketball coach Vic Rimmer knows his team can be successful when it scores in transition.

All season, Rimmer has hammered the point home to his players that if they move the ball quickly, especially off defensive rebounds, they can score easy baskets.

The Lady Saints took that point to heart Thursday night, scoring several times in transition and defeating Gentry 53-34 in 4A-1 Conference play.

Leading the way for Shiloh (16-7, 9-2) was sophomore Meagan Henley, who scored a teamhigh 12 points. Junior Hannah Persing also contributed 10 points.

“We match very well with Gentry defensively; that’s a very good basketball team,” Rimmer said. “So when we’re able to score baskets that way, we felt like it’d give us an early advantage. We did a good job of that (Thursday).”

Besides the batch of easy scores, the Lady Saints also made 19 of 22 (86 percent) free throws, something Rimmer said has been a work in progress for his players this season. Throughoutthe last month, Rimmer said his team has practiced shooting “thousands” of shots from the free-throw line.

“It’s something (getting to the foul line) we’re able to do, so we have to capitalize,” Rimmer said. “I thought we certainly shot well from the foul line, it was a major difference.”

Gentry made only four shots in the second half, totaling 12 points. The Lady Pioneers (15-6, 5-4) also had 12 turnovers overall.

Leading Gentry on offense was junior Terra Jones, who scored a game-high 14 points.

“The tough thing is we worked on defensive transition a lot because we knew that’s what Shiloh did best,” Gentry coach Tim Rippy said. “I thought we had some good shots in the first half, but in the second half, Shiloh just got after us and did a good job of making their shots.”

The Lady Saints had a 11-3 run just before halftime, then had two big 3-pointers in the third quarter from Jesse Parks, who finished with six points.

“We’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing if we want to finish our season the right way,” Rimmer said. “I liked the way we played (Thursday), nowthe key will be maintaining that in the next couple of weeks.” Shiloh Christian 70, Gentry 54

BOYS - When a player is on, he’s on - just ask Shiloh’s David Eichler.

Eichler scored a gamehigh 27 points by knocking down seven 3-pointers, including five in the first half for the Saints (12-9, 7-4).

Beside Eichler, the Saints also had big performances from Tyler Nation (15 points) and Harlin Trumbo (11).

Gentry (9-12, 0-9) jumped out to a fourpoint lead by the end of the first half before Shiloh outscored the Pioneers by 15 in the second quarter.

Kevin Scherer led Gentry with 14 points and Austin Millsap had 13.
