Schools get new mascot

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

— A new mascot - in the form of an 18-week-old, male English Bulldog - was donated to the Decatur School District.

Basketball coach Donnie Smith’s wife Paula helped connect the school with Alisha and Sean Worley of Classay Bulldogs in Jay, Okla., who donated the puppy.

On Monday, athletic director Bobby King carried the chunky puppy from class to class to meet the students. So far he doesn’t have a name, but that will change.

Smith is taking nominations for a name from students. School staff will narrow the list down to six names, and then students can vote for their favorite name as many times as they like for 25 cents a vote.

The name will be announced during Colors Day cer-emonies on Jan. 22, and the money raised will go towards the school’s basketball teams.

When not performing his mascot duties, the puppy will live with the Smith family.
