Gentry boys fall to Berryville, girls win

— Berryville used a 10-0 run in the second quarter and an 11-0 run in the third to lift it to a 49-38 victory over the Gentry Pioneers in 1-4A Conference play Friday night at Bobcat Arena.

Senior forward K.J. Phillips, the Bobcats’ leading scorer who is averaging more than 19 points per game, didn’t score until late in the third quarter, but by then Berryville had built a 15-point advantage as the other Bobcats made up for the void.

“K.J. scored 31 points Tuesday night at Shiloh Christian and we lose by six,” Berryville Coach Brent Compton said. “I know he would have taken just one point and gotten the win instead of the other way around, and tonight for the first three quarters we basically used him as a decoy.”

After a sluggish first quarter where the teams combined for 13 turnoversand just 12 points, the Bobcats came out firing in the second quarter to erase an 8-4 deficit. A three-pointer by Eric Holman at the 6:50 make put Berryville up 9-8 and gave the Bobcats the lead for good. Two minutes later, Adam Sugg canned a threepointer that capped a 10-0 run for a 14-8 lead.

Only nine combined points were scored by the two teams the rest of the quarter, five of those from the free-throw line, as Berryville held an 18-13 advantage at intermission.

Holman hit his second three-pointer at the beginning of the second half, but Gentry managed to close the gap to 21-18 at the 4:50 mark of the third quarter. However, the Pioneers went dry on the offensive end for over three minutes while the Bobcats scored 11 in a row, including eight by Caleb Price, who had a pair of three-pointers in the run. Sugg added his second three-pointer of the night as Berryville went up 32-18.

Berryville led 35-22 going into the final quarter, when Gentry tried to make a couple of runs but only got as close as 45-38 in the final minute before Alex Dowdle scored the final four points for the Bobcats.

Holman scored 11 points to lead Berryville.

Kevin Scherer led the Pioneers with 19 points.
