— Substitute Orientation

Gentry Public Schools will be conducting a midyear substitute orientation at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the high school library, for individuals wishing to be eligible to substitute in classrooms, on buses and in the cafeteria for the remainder of the year. Current approved substitutes need not attend. Applicants are responsible for all fees related to criminal background checks and tuberculosis testing. Only serious applicants need attend. Gentry City Council

The Gentry City Council holds regular meetings in the city court room at 6:30 p.m., the first Monday of each month. The Gentry Planning and Zoning Commission meets in city hall at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month.

Gentry School Board

The Gentry School Board holds regular meetings at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in the school district board room.

Springtown Council

The Springtown Council meets at 6 p.m., on the second Tuesday of each month, in the new community building.

Town of Highfill

Highfill’s next council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Highfill Community Building. The planning commission meeting is at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Chamber Awards

Gentry Chamber of Commerce is currently taking nominations for the 2009 community awards. The honors, along with the Lifetime Achievement Awards and honors for Arkansas’ Farm Family of the Year winners Bill and Delia Haak, will be presented at the Gentry Community Awards Night, beginning at 6 p.m. on Feb. 25, at the Wooden Spoon Restaurant in Gentry. Nominations are being accepted through Feb. 5 for Organization of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Pioneer of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Business Person of the Year. Recycling Services Available

Western Recycling invites area residents and businesses to take advantage of its 24-7 drop-off location on Dawn Hill Road, just west of the Flint Creek Cemetery. Recyclables can also be dropped in one of the many recycling containers around the community. Western Recycling takes newspapers, shredded paper, paper, junk mail, cardboard, plastic bottles, plastic bags (including store bags) aluminum, iron and tin. Gentry Senior Activity Center

Gentry Senior Activity Center, at 121 East Main Street (just east of the Gentry Public Library) is open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Meals and rides to the center and activities are available Monday through Friday by calling Jackie Bader, the center’s manager, at 736-0378. Van routes are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday - Gentry, Highfill and Springtown; and Tuesday and Friday - Gentry and Decatur.

Pickin’ in the Park

Pickin’ in the Park is held at 6:30 p.m., the last Saturday of each month, at the Gentry Senior Activity Center. Musicians and music lovers are invited to come and join in or just sit back and enjoy the music.
