— The Highfill Extension Club met Monday, Jan. 18, with president Peggy Dillahunty presiding.

Lori Bass, who served 11 years in the army with two tours in Iraq, told of the organization “Soldiers Angels” which adopts soldiers for writing letters or sending packages. The organization has names of 1,800 soldiers who have requested someone to write to them.

The program was presented by Irene Gilbert. She taught us the do’s and don’ts of snacking. Snacks can work for people when nutrient-rich and low-infat snacks are selected. Gilbert told members that the amount of sugar in several common snacks is nine to 12 teaspoons in carbonated drinks and three teaspoons in a 1-ounce chocolate bar.

Many snacks have lots of fat and oil, she said. Substitution were suggested. A buffet of delicious healthy snacks was served. Drinking plenty of water is often forgotten.

The next meeting will be at 10 a.m., Feb. 15, at 1221 East Main. The subject to be discussed is “Medicines in the House; Using Medicines Wisely.” All are welcome to attend.
