Football is on in Decatur

— There will be a senior high football team at the Decatur High School this year, and summer practice is in full swing, according to head coach Stan Ellis.

Last year's senior high football season was canceled because of a lack of participation, but that won’t be a problem this year, Ellis said. Around 20 students have been attending summer practice. The numbers are encouraging because summer practice is not required, he explained. If only the same students show up for mandatory practice, beginning in early August, there will be plenty to field a football team, he said.

Some players may not be able to attend summer practice because they have a job or are out of town visiting relatives, so numbers could increase in August. Having 20 players serious about the team and wanting to improve so they can compete for various positions is a good sign, Ellis said.
