Facility At Centerton Gives County Citizens Recycling Options

— How can Benton County residents, those in rural areas as well as those who live in incorporated cities and towns, dispose of recyclable items?

That question is answered through the Benton County Recycling Center which is located south of Centerton. The center is financed by the county which is also considering the opening of a second center to be located east on Bethlehem Road between Gravette and Decatur.

The Centerton Center is open Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to drop off bulky waste/items such as furniture, appliances, styrofoam, electronics and tires which are accepted ONLY during those business hours. Some items may be disposed of at no cost; for others there is a small fee.

Fee Structure

Briefly this is the fee schedule for items dropped off during open hours:

Electronics, including microwaves, $2 per item.

Household furniture such as mattresses, couches, etc., $20 per cubic yard.

Household appliances which contain refrigerant, $10 per item. However if a refrigerant line is broken or cut a penalty of $25 is added. It is illegal to break or cut a refrigerant line.

Scrap metal and other household appliances, such as ranges, dishwashers, hot water heaters, etc. No charge.

Styrofoam such as packing peanuts (no boat dock foam, food trays, cups, carryout boxes). No charge for household quantities.

Tires: These are accepted at Norms in Bentonville, Best Brake in Rogers and Benton County Tire in Siloam Springs. Four passenger tires (not on rim) four (4) may be accepted free per week. More than four, tires on rims and tires larger than 19.5 inch accepted with a charge.

Paper, Plastic, Glass, Etc.

Other household recyclables may be disposed of at no charge in specified bins which are available 24 hours per day. This includes bottles, cans, plastics, paper products, aluminum cans, etc. The following regulations apply.

No 1. plastic bottles, which include most soft drink, juice and some shampoo bottles. Remove caps, rinse and crush as much as possible.

No 2 plastic bottles which are opaque containers such as milk bottles, Same treatment applies.

No 2. colored plastic bottles such as colored detergent, juice jugs. Same treatment applies.

Aluminum cans, soft drink, beer, etc. Empty, rinse and crush.

Cardboard Mix includes corrugated, boxboard, chip board and brown bags and paper egg cartons. Remove all packing/plastic materials, flatten. Remove any food from items.

Glass Bottles and Jars. Remove lids, rinse. Sort by color for separate bins for green and blue, brown, clear. No window glass, ceramic, cookware, bulbs, accepted.

Paper Mix, includes newspapers, slick coated publications, computer paper, junk mail, phone books, etc. Remove any plastic, CDs, credit cards. Staples are O.K.

Steel cans for food, vegetables, fruit, etc. Rinse and flatten if possible.

Hazardous Waste Household amounts of hazardous waste such as aerosols, antifreeze, batteries, ballasts, fluorescent bulbs, cleansers, corrosive liquids, fertilizers, flammable items, pool chemicals, oil, paint, pesticides, needles, etc. are accepted free once per week at the Siloam Springs Transfer Station, 1004 East Main, or Enviro-Sources, 1700 S. First Street, Rogers. There is a limit on weekly disposal and a charge for banned pesticides.

It is noted that items not accepted are construction waste, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, carpet, linoleum, shingles, sheetrock, doors, glass, concrete, yard and tree debris/ clippings and plastic plant containers, etc.
