The following items appeared in the Gravette News Herald July 21, 1960:

— Charles Butner, who lived north of Mt. Pleasant, was attacked by an owl in his brooder house. Using a cane he fought off the bird which was after the 7,500 five week old chicks in the house.

Sparks from a train started a 10-mile-long series of fires along the Kansas City Southern right-of-way from Gentry to Gravette.

Volunteers took almost four hours to extinguish the blazes.

L. E. Perry, candidate for county judge, ran a full page ad with pictures of bridge work including Spavinaw Creek bridge east of Gravette and a concrete slab near Sibley’s at Sulphur. Perry was seeking re-election.

Lizzie Meek at Wet Prairie reported she saw her first June bug on July 8. “Just one,” she said.

Three students on the honor roll at John Brown University were Leslie Netherton and Guy Ward of Maysville and Bruce Long of Gravette.

There were 51 cases of tuberculosis reported in Arkansas during the first three months of the year.

A large crowd attended the auction sale of the Maysville Drug Store, Lydia Birkes reported. Everything was sold. “We would love to see someone open a drug store here,” she wrote.
