BBQ poker run to benefit 4-H, FFA

— A benefit poker run to raise money for Decatur 4-H and FFA students will be held on Aug. 7 in conjunction with the 57th Annual Decatur Barbecue.

Organizer Kim Wilkins said the poker run will raise money to award Decatur 4-H and FFA members exhibiting at the Benton County Fair. Because ofthe economy, exhibitors are not receiving the financial support they once did at the premium sale after the fair, Wilkins said. Younger students, such as those in the 4-H Cloverbud division, are not allowed to sell their animals at premium after the fair.

“We want the kids to make enough to pay for feed and have enough left over to buy an animal next year. It does cost a lot to get them to the fair,” she said.

Wilkins hopes to raise enoughmoney to award each participant from Decatur $25. She estimated that she will need to raise about $2,000.

Sign-up for the poker run will begin at 8 a.m., and riders may leave between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. The cost for participation is $10 per hand and will include lunch. The first 20 riders will get a free T-shirt.
