Colcord schools awarded grant to remodel building

— Federal grants totaling more than $12 million have been awarded to six Oklahoma schools to provide energy efficient buildings, U.S. Rep. Dan Boren’s office announced May 13.

Some districts will build new campuses and others will remodel existing campuses.

The Impact Aid School Construction grants totaled $12,053,362, said Cole Perryman, spokesman for Boren.

Schools receiving grants were Antlers Public Schools, $2.72 million;Cave Springs School, $1.83 million; Clayton Public Schools, $316,604; Colcord Public Schools, $1.73 million; Kinta Public Schools, $979,674; and Locust Grove, $4.47 million.

Funding for the grants is part of the 2009 federal stimulus package..

Colcord schools will remodel and bring up to code a 54-year-old building. The project will use energy-efficient heating and air units, windows, and more.

Locust Grove money is earmarked to build a new early childhood education center. The 45,000-squarefoot building will house 24 classrooms, a cafeteria, library and other space.

The Cave Springs School District will replace the elementary school building with a 14,800-square-foot building.

Kinta school officials will improve fire safety systems, and renovate areas near the seventh- and eighth-grade campus and the cafeteria.

Clayton will repair the school’s roof. During inclement weather the school is required to close approximately 600 square feet of classroom space.

Antlers school district plans to add on to an elementary building. The new building will house first- and second-grade classrooms and offices.
