Writers hear about Abraham Lincoln

— Siloam Springs Writers met at Signature Bank Social Room to hear a program by Professor Galen Johnson from John Brown University.

Johnson showed photographs he had taken of Lincoln memorials across the nation. He compared the opinions of the American people in the 1930s regarding President Lincoln to thepublic attitude toward him during the last twenty years.

Awards from April writing contests were presented as follows: Poetry - First Place, Georgia Bateman, “Miracle for Christmas”; Second Place - Rachel Kulp, “See the Vees”; Third Place - Billie Hammers, “A Late Bloomer.” Prose winners were: First Place - Ted Weathers, “February’s Unexpected Gift”; and 2nd Place - RachelKulp, “My Big Surprise.”

The next Writers’ meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at Books on Broadway. Roger Youmans, author of “When Bull Elephants Fight,” will be the speaker. The public is invited to hear his presentation.

June assignments are: Prose - “A Horse Story,” and Poetry - “An Elegy.”
