Students show projects

— Students in the sixth through eighth grades displayed their science projects for the community on Thursday night.

The middle school students created a number of fascinating displays and experiments, including a replica of the human eye compared to a fly’s eye, winning the grand prize, and a test to compare whether human hair, dog hair or pig hair absorbed oil more efficiently.

Science teacher LaVonn Foreman said the students have worked on the projects for the past three weeks. Most of the work was done in the classrooms to make sure the students did the projects themselves.

Foreman said she hopes the science fair will encourage students to enjoy science and improve test scores.

“They really learned a lot,” she said.

The grand prize winner won an i-pod. First place winners won digital cameras and second and third place winners chose between a variety of prizes and science kits.

Grand Prize - Courtney Lawrence.

Chemical Science - First place, Teddy Clements; second place, Haley Burden; third place, Orlando Aguirre; and honorable mention, Joni Fuentez and Samantha Goble.

Earth Science - First place, Ger Vang; secondplace, Timothy Clements; third place, Trey Kell, and honorable mention, Martha Gonzalez.

Physical Science - First place, Cordelle Belle; second place, Hannah Ramsey; third place, Rick Hickson; and honorable mention, Hailey Mead and Holly Goodwin.

Life Science - First place, Megan Anderson; second place, Lynlee Witcher; third place, Lacy Barrett; and honorable mention, Bailey Bills.

Electrical Science - First place, Zach Tollett; second place, Edgar Soto; third place, Mario Urguidi; and honorable mention, Triston Stuthers and Jose Estrada.

Special Interest - LaNessa Phillips, Ana Regalado, Kyle Shaffer, Caleb Mead and Jeremy Miller.
