Millsap settles in as Pioneers’ quarterback

— Gentry will have a new quarterback for the second time in Brian Little’s tenure at the school, but the transition has been a smooth one.

Austin Millsap was a backup to three-year starter Caleb Ramsey last season, but the senior has stepped in nicely as the Pioneers quarterback in the offseason.

Against Class 7A competition at the Rogers Heritage team camp last week, Millsap held his own for the Class 4A Pioneers. Millsap completed several big passes last Tuesday after throwing five touchdowns in the Monday evening scrimmage.

“I’m pleased with the things he did,” Little said of Millsap. “We are not really breaking in a new quarterback. We are really pleased with the reps we got and the competition. We just have to be more polished.”

Gentry lineman Gunter DeZurik also had a solid outing at the camp. De-Zurik is one of the Pioneers’ more experienced returnees after playing on the offensive and defensive lines the past two seasons.

“DeZurik is very smart, and obviously, he is goodsized,” Little said. “We are expecting him to play a big role for us.”
