Council and mayor positions up for election

— DECATUR - Filing deadlines are nearing for those interested in running for a seat on the city council or for the office of mayor.

All six city council positions are up for election in November, as well as the office of Mayor, according to city administrative assistant Kim Wilkins.

In order to be listed on the ballots for the November 2 elections, candidates must submit all of the proper paperwork - including a petition, political practices pledge and affidavit of eligibility - to the Benton County Clerk’s office, between Aug. 4 and noon on Aug. 24.

The petition must be signed by 10 registered voters residing withinthe city limits of Decatur, according to the county clerk’s office.

The city of Decatur is divided into three wards, and two alderman are elected from each ward. Aldermen serve two-year terms, and the mayor serves a four-year term.

Maps of Decatur's wards may be obtained at the Decatur City Hall or the Benton County Clerk's office.

Information packets, filing requirements and forms are available at the County Clerk’s office in Bentonville at 215 E. Central Avenue, Suite 217; in Rogers at 300 W.Poplar Street, Suite 2; or in Siloam Springs at 707 S. Lincoln Street, Suite C. Candidates are urged to pick up their packets in person so they can be given further instructions.
