A Second Opinion | Take time to make memories

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

A family friend, Dale Crawley, shared a letter his grown son sent him for Fathers Day. It was a really nice letter and it puts in perspective what the important things are in life.

As a parent, its easy to get caught up in taking care of responsibilities and making a living. This letter shows that it’s important not to forget to spend time with our children and make memories.

Dear Dad,

I just wanted to write you a letter on this Fathers Day. Thank you for being my dad. Some kids grow up not knowing their fathers, but I am thankful for you. I remember you coaching my baseball teams, takingus swimming at the creek, going fishing at Padre Island, fishing trips to Crystal (Lake), Grand (Lake) and other places. Thank you for spending time with me. I don’t remember much about Puerto Rico, but remember England.

I remember swinging on the clothesline and splitting my head open and wanting a Band-Aid. I remember my electric train set, extra strong mints, and playing soccer in the snow.

Thank you for all those experiences most kids never had.

I remember San Antonio, playing baseball, going to the Houston Astros game because you helped us sell candy to earn the most for our trip.

I remember going to Decatur across the old rickety railroad viaduct and Grandma and Grandpa’s house. I remember getting ice at the chicken plant for ice cream.

I remember you taking us to St. Louis with Lynval, going back to England on vacation, and Nana giving me brandy because I was homesick and couldn’t go to sleep.

There are many more stories, but just wanted to say I love you and thankyou for being my dad. Hope you have a great day.

Don

This letter makes me ask myself, “What do you want your children to remember when they are 60?”
