Girls wins big in opening match

— The Gentry High School girls’ soccer team opened conference play with a 6-0 win over Eureka Springs on Friday.

“We played well throughout the match,” said Gentry coach, Dan Childress.

Sophomore forward Kanisha Eckart led the scoring with three goals. Junior forward Kendra Boyd added two and senior forward Yochabel added another. Sophomore midfielder EmilyBond served several balls in from the outside, picking up assists on two. Senior midfielder Adora Lee also added an assist.

The win brings the girls’ conference record to 1-0 and the team’s overall varsity record to 3-1 on the year.

The girls beat Berryville 7-0 on March 9. Kendra Boyd scored four, Yochabel Perales scored two and Kanisha Eckart put in one.

The team lost 4-0 to Siloam Springs on March 5. “We were missing afew people and had several under the weather,” Childress said. “However, I thought, overall, it was a good effort and it gave us a chance to gain valuable experience for some new players.”

The team continued with conference play at Green Forest on Tuesday (after press time), with friendly matches scheduled against Heritage junior varsity and Siloam Springs junior varsity on Thursday and Friday, before taking the week off for spring break.
