Nellie Woods

Nellie Gertrude Woods, 95, of Hermiston, OR, died March 13, 2010, at Regency Hermiston Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born February 7, 1915, in Sulphur Sprigs, the daughter of Jeff and Anna May Clark Setser.

She was raised and attended school in Arkansas and Southwest City, MO. She married Lawrence L. “Ted” Woods July 2, 1933. They lived in Arizona, California and then John Day, OR, from 1959 to 1973 where she worked at Blue Mountain Mills. They returned to Gravette in 1973 and operated a chicken farm. Mr.Woods preceded her in death.

Mrs. Woods was a member of the Gravette United Methodist Church and later attended Hermiston Church of Nazarene. She sewed band flags for the U of A marching band and volunteered in the Gravette school many years.

Survivors include three daughters, Doris Gaylord and husband Dale and Helen Woods, all of Hermiston, and Nina Woods and husband Paul Reiser of Napa, CA; five grandchildren, six greatgrandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A private burial will be held at Lee Cemetery northwest of Gravette. Memorials may be made to the Lee Cemetery Fund, c/oVirginia Todd, Box 403, Gravette.

Burns Mortuary of Hermiston, OR, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Lou Powell

Mary Lou Powell, 87, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at Windsor Gardens Nursing Home in Panorama City, CA. She was born November 7, 1929, the daughter of Albert and Georgia Dunagin.

She grew up in Gravette where she graduated from high school and then attended Draughns Business School in Springfield, MO. She was recruited by Western Union to work as a telegrapher during World War II. She married Bernard Jackson Powell on December 28, 1945, and eventually moved to California where she worked more than 20 years in the school photography development area and later began a second career in real estate. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years; a sister, Ruth; and a brother, David.

Survivors include one brother, Albert Dunagin, Jr., and wife Jane of Gravette; two sons, Thomas Powell and wife Anita of Placentia, CA, and Dr. James Powell and wife Sherry, currently of Bury, England; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held March 25 at Rose Hills Cemetery Rainbow Chapel.
