— For the third year in a row, the Decatur Assembly of God’s Junior Bible Quiz team qualified to compete in the state championships.

The team won second place at the regional qualifying tournament in Bella Vista on March 13, earning them a spot at the championship.

The championship tournament will be held in Russellville on April 9 and 10. Decatur’s team will compete with the top two teams from seven regions across the state.

Members of the Decatur team were also among the top individual scorers in the regional qualifying tournament. Amanda Duncan won second place for her overall individual score of 430 points. Trey Anderson won third place and Matt Anderson won fourth place, individually.

The Decatur team won first place in the mid-season tournament in December. Team members began practicing twice a week when school started in the fall and have competed in monthly tournaments since November.

The children put an incredible amount of time and effort into memorizing Bible verses and facts, according to coach Sandy Duncan. During the game- showstyle quizzes, students race to “buzz in” and correctly answer Bible questions.

“Junior Bible Quiz was created and designed to help children develop a love for the Bible and an understanding that its truth can guide their lives daily. Junior Bible Quiz offers a fun, exciting way to motivate children to understand the all-important truths in God’s Word,” according to the organization’s Web site, www.nationaljbq. org.
