Spring brings heavy snows

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

— Spring arrived over the weekend, but the weather proved the truthfulness of the old saying, “It ain’t over until it’s over.”The blossoms of spring flowers which were abundant on the last days of winter were hard to find by the time spring officially arrived, being covered under a thick layer of heavy, wet snow.

The rains that began in the early hours of Saturday morning changed over to sleet and then to snow later in the day, blanketing the Gentry area with nearly a foot of the stuff by Sunday morning. The snow, sleet and rain continued throughout Sunday with temperatures bordering on the freezing mark most of the day.

The snow and ice made streets and roads slushy and slick, making driving a bit hazardous and causing some to get stuck along roadways.

The timing was perfect to avoid the need to add on instruction days lost to snow at the end of the school year because Monday marked the beginning of spring break for Gentry schools.

Students looking forward to outdoor activities during their break had opportunity to start off their vacation from classes by riding sleds and building snowmen. But weather forecasters were promising more seasonable weather and much warmer temperatures during the week, giving students on spring break an opportunity for some springtime activities as well, without traveling south.
