Council Changes Water Billing Ordinance; Appoints Forrest White To Council

Gravette City Council Thursday night failed to approve the second reading of Ordinance 153, enacted more than 50 years ago, which created the Gravette Volunteer Fire Department. It has undergone several amendments in ensuing years.

Glenn Corley was mayor and R. L. Bayley was fire chief when the undated ordinance was adopted. Section one of that document read, “This ordinance being retroactive to January, 1934.”

Further study is expected before a new department organizational ordinancemay be considered.

In other action the Council repealed Ordinance 08-06 involving meter reading, payment and other procedures for the water department.

In three readings, the Council approved a new ordinance which provides for a penalty for late charges, reconnection fees, handling of overdue accounts, water deposits, sewer adjustments involving leaks, etc. and notification of leaks. Also a $10 fee was approved for a 24-hour temporary water turn on for landlord cleaning of rental properties and minimum billage if usage exceeds 1,000 gallons.

Action on a fireman’s pension fund question was tabled for further study.

In final action Forrest White, who lives on El Paso Street SE, was named to fill the position of Alderman in Ward 2, which was vacated recently by Patrick Hall, who moved from the ward.

White will fill the position until the end of this year. He is eligible to seek re-election to the two-year position in the November general elec-
