Gentry soccer teams have good first half

— Soccer teams finished the first half of their season with a number of games on the week before spring break.

The girls picked up a big conference win at Green Forest with a 5-2 victory on March 16. Junior forward Kendra Boydput four goals into the net and senior forward Yochabel Perales added another to guarantee the victory.

The girls played two “friendly” matches with Heritage junior varsity and Siloam Springs junior varsity teams on March 18 and 19. The girls dropped the Heritage match 2-1 but defeated Siloam 5-0.

Yochabel Perales hadthe lone goal in the Heritage match. In the Siloam match, Kendra Boyd scored two, Perales added another two and sophomore Kanisha Eckart scored one.

“We had a great first half of the season, finishing with a 4-1 varsity record overall and 2-0 in conference,” Gentry girls’ coach Dan Childress said.

Kendra Boyd leads allscorers with 16 goals, followed by Yochabel Perales with nine and Kanisha Eckart with eight, according to Childress. Goals were also added by senior midfielder Adora Lee and sophomore midfielder Emily Bond.

“Adora’s presence in the midfield offensively and defensively has been a big key to our success,” Childress said. “Yochabel hasalso added seven assists.”

The girls resume conference play this Thursday at home against Berryville. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m.

The Gentry boys’ team beat the Siloam Springs jumior varsity team 1-0 on the Friday before spring break.

“Siloam applied good pressure on the defense all night with the speed oftheir forewards,” Childress said. “Marking backs Cameron Smith and Johnathan Murillo played one of their better games this season to shut them out.”

The Pioneers scored the game’s only goal on a cross from Alex Xiong to Elijah Calbaza in the second half.

The boys will also play Berryville on Thursday, with a 7 p.m. game time.
