Maysville EH Club February Meeting

The Maysville E. H. Club met at the community center Thursday, March 25. Eleven members were present and Jewel Crawley was hostess for the delicious dinner and was assisted by Mary Crawley.

Orpha Wardlaw, president, called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m. We pledged allegiance to the U. S. flag and sang a song. Jewel Lukens read a poem entitled “Discouraged”.

Jewel Crawley presented the lesson about Vitamin D and your health. Vitamin D is needed to absorb calcium, to have a healthy immune system and to prevent anemia. It is not found in many foods. Our body can make Vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight. Some of the foods with Vitamin D are salmon, tuna, mackerel and fish liver oil. Some foods with smaller amounts are beef liver, cheese, egg yolks and fortified milk. People over the age of 30 years have an increased risk for low Vitamin D status. Some research suggests that Vitamin D has a protective effect against colon, prostate and breast cancer.

Orpha and Jewel Crawley showed some quilt blocks and pillow cases they are making for the national project called “Quilts of Valor” for wounded soldiers to help brighten their days. Red, white and blue colors are used.

Melinda Crawley gave a helpful hint for the garden plants. Put a styrofoam glass (with the bottom cut out) over the plant to keep cutworms and bugs from damaging it.

We received several used chairs from the Gravette City Hall and say “Thank You” to them.

Sylvia Tucker reported on the use of the community building. Bert Ballmann reported that the Senior Citizen Day Thursday was well attended and enjoyed.

Marvin and Eddie Ballmann are to be thanked for installing a new door between the hall and dining room.

Some of our members attended a county meeting in February about planning lessons for the clubs. Katherine drew the quarter package furnished by Bert.

Sylvia will be hostess for the April 22 meeting and also present the lesson.
