Charlotte’s Corner Thinking of April, May events

Did you enjoy May Day? What, you didn’t realize is what a big holiday the first of May is? What about Cinco de Mayo? I am sure a lot of you have heard of that holiday.

Certainly, there are little holidays that pass us by and we don’t think of them as a special day. I have a cousin who was born on the first of May, so she was named Helen May. I always think of her on that special May Day.

I want to make a comment on the way the Flint Creek Cemetery looks. For a change, it is being mowed the way it should be; and believe me, the community around that cemetery is pleased.

I always consider that “my” cemetery, since my family mowed it for about thirty years … I remember my parents mowing it with a push mower when it had a back fence. They got paid $16 for doing it. I remember wishing we had a weed eater, when my parents took scissors down to cut the extra grass around the stones. It wasso thrilling when Daddy finally got a riding mower. Then He helped us mow. Until then, Mom and us kids always used the old push mowers. But when daddy helped a couple times, he decided a riding mower was in order.

Anyway, it is looking really nice, and we so appreciate the efforts being made to keep it looking that way.

Our condolences go to Amanda at the Gentry Post Office at the loss of her brother. Death is so permanent. That is why it is so hard for us who are still living to let that person go. To Marcia Meigs, and the Davis family, I am so sorry at the loss of your cousin, David Cornshucker. I knew David “way back when,” when I dated his buddy Melvin and David was always such a cut up. When I recently saw him at the Laundromat in Gentry and he looked so thin, he told me he was battling cancer.

Then, he said, “But, I have given my heart to the Lord, and if He thinksI should go, I am going to do things His way.”

Well, I guess we all should be so willing to do things God’s way. David was proud of giving his heart to the Lord. He mentioned it more than once. And so, if a person dies in the Lord, that is a good thing.

On April 12th, my son Benton turned 21. Since we didn’t get to see him on his birthday, it was a little sad for us but he said, “Oh, Jessica is going to get me a cake, and let’s see, since I am 21, I guess she should make me a RUM cake.” He doesn’t drink, thank heavens, but thought that was pretty funny. At least my daughter was near him, so they had a party down at his church in Texas.

Also Milton Jensen, a long-time resident of Gentry, (our first landlord when we came to Gentry in l968), turned 100 this month. He is now living with his daughter in Texas, but a lot of people sent him cards for a card shower.

Also, Happy birthday to Dan Erskin, Ken Hill, Rob Sample, Kristalyn Hale, Mike Misener, Jackie Wren, David Jensen, Alvin Brinegar, Bruce Robeson, Greg Sutherland, Kendall Pendergrass and Samuel Guilliams. My brother,Nels, also turned 50, so we can now officially call him an old man.

Morris and Marcy Maxwell visited their grandson, Steve Asher, this last month. Morris and Marcy have lived here in Gentry since Shep was a Pup. Well, you know the saying, they now reside in Florida… I bet they wonder sometimes why they moved to such a sunny climate when they could have stayed in hot, humid Arkansas.

Congratulations to Carey and Mark Rotramel in the event of their wedding. I wish them many years of happiness and hope that their life is like her maiden name, a garden of Poseys.

Enjoy May, it is about time those kids get out of school and get to stay home for a few months. I know Mom is looking so forward to that, having them underfoot so they can help with house cleaning and dishes. Well, it was a good thought.

My May means my children will get out of college and come home for the summer, so I am glad for them to be underfoot for another few months.
