A Great Graduation Day

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

At the wind-swept Lion Stadium Saturday morning, 114 Gravette High School graduates received their diploma marking the end of 13 years of public school studies.

Bleachers on the east side of the stadium were filled with expectant, happy and proud parents, grandparents, relatives and friends as the graduates took their places at mid-field under a blue sky filled with puffy winter clouds.

The wind was something else. Wind-catching mortarboards the graduates wore had to be held tight or they went flying in the breeze. Even the treasured diploma packets took a hit from the strong wind gusts.

It didn’t matter.

It was a warm, late spring day and the program went off in perfect time, ending with those mortarboards getting a boost from the graduates as they flung them high into the air.

The pomp and pageantry of the occasion went smoothly as the Gravette band providedthe expected “Pomp and Circumstance” as faculty and administration led the graduates onto the field. School board members had their traditional places of honor.

Honor Grads Colton Moorman led the graduating class with distinguished high honors.

Earning high honors are Makayla Morrison, Taylor McCaffrey, Jacy Alsup, Jesse Owens, Tajhe Turner, Mackenzie Wallace, Nick Hendren, Kayleigh Duncan and Jessica Springs. Honors graduates are Sarah Malone, Shelby Thomason and Brittany DeWitt.

Class president was Nick Hendren; vice president, Jacy Alsup, secretary, Mackenzie Wallace; treasurer, Colton Moorman; Student Council reps, Kayleigh Duncan and Lincoln Parker. The class colors were black, orange and silver; class flower, the daisy; class motto, “The Purpose of Life is a Life of Purpose”. - Robert Byrne.
