A Whole Lot of Shakin’ In Benton County Last Thursday As Second Tremor Felt Here

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

The second time in less than a month, Benton County was “all shook up” last Thursday evening when a minor earthquake was felt throughout the area.

The quake, which registered 2.6 on the Richter scale, occurred at 7.01:52 p.m. and was centered about three miles north and west of Cave Springs.

This was in the same area a quake occurred on April 29. That tremor registered 2.5 on the scale.

Persons throughout the county, including the Gravette area, experienced the sound and rumbling which sounded to some like a heavy thud accompanied by a “shake” that sometimes accompaniesheavy thunder.

No major damage was reported though some Centerton and area residents near the quake epicenter reported that some doors were misaligned and that their houses shook more noticeably than was reported in the Gravette area.

Earthquake experts notethat the .1 increase in the Richter scale from the 2.5 April 29 quake almost doubled its intensity and magnitude on a progressive scale.

According to reports the quakes occurred along what is known as the Bella Vista fault that crosses a portion of north and west Benton County.
