Fire Safety demonstration: an important lesson not only for school but also for home

The Gravette Fire Department training house, above, gave the children a first-hand look at how to react to fires and safety measures are important to prevent serious injury, etc. (A demonstration showed that even a pan on a stove filled with hot water can be hazardous if its handle is hit, spilling the scalding water on a person).

The children were also shown how to react in a smoke-filled (simulated smoke) room. These children have just moved through the demonstration trailer.

Learning and fun at the mobile hay ride and pumpkin patch

Another special activity during the month of October at Glenn Duffy Elementary School in Gravette was when Legacy Farms of Goshen (Washington County) brought their mobile pumpkin patch/hay ride to the campus. The visit was to help the children learnmore about plants and animals.

Several parents assisted as teachers guided the children through the events which included sitting as a group (pictured here) while a representative from the farm told the children about different plants including pumpkins. He also talked about animals and the children even learned that snakes (emphasized non-poisonous) can be very beneficial.

The photo at upper right shows children as they “enjoyed a ride” in a stationary hay wagon filled with corn and hay.

Omega-man teaches kids to say "No to Drugs "

Strongman “Omega-man” visited Glenn Duffy Elementary school several days ago as Red Ribbon Week was observed to help childen learn the importance of saying “No to Drugs.”

His demonstration focused on strength as he bent a steel bar with his teeth, broke a baseball, and, as shown below, crushed a soda can with his hands, spraying liquid toward the spell-bound students. The photo is fuzzy because notonly did Omega-man and children move, but also the photographer.

His lesson was for children to be strong in saying no to drugs, to be strong in following their dreams and for them to be winners.

Gravette volunteer firefighters and emergency service technicians visited Glenn Duffy Elementary School recently where they helped children learn how to practice fire safety both at school and at home. All students, pre-school through second grade, participated, said principal Zane Vanderpool.

The photo at left shows firefighters and EMT personnel explaining to students how a fire engine operates. The children enjoyed the close-up look at the vehicle with all its dials and equipment.
