— The Pioneers (0-3) dropped two more games in play on the basketball court last week, losing to Rogers Heritage on Friday and to Elkins on Tuesday.

The Pioneers couldn’t keep up with the pace ofWar Eagles in Rogers on Friday, being out-scored 52-30 in the non-conference game. The War Eagles jumped ahead in the first quarter and steadily built on that lead throughout the game.

Kevin Scherer was Gentry’s high scorer with only five points behindhis name. Joe Morris and Eathen Ramsey each had three.

The Pioneers lost by a single point in the final moments of last Tuesday’s home game against Elkins.

The game remained close all evening, with the Pioneers holding on to a slim lead at the half and being up by seven at the end of the third quarter.

The Elks trailed 47-36 with 7:03 left, but Gentry failed to make a field goal the rest of the game.

Junior Dakota Nielsen, who led Elkins with 19 points, scored seven straight in the fourth quarter to lead the Elks back. Nielsen’s driving lay-up with 54 seconds left tied it at 53.

Gentry’s Justin Bryant made one of two free throws with 33.7 seconds remaining to give the Pioneers the 54-53 lead and set the stage for Blackburn’s game-winning shot off the glass.

The Pioneers were scheduled to play Decatur at Decatur on Tuesday, after press time.
