— The Billy V. Hall Senior Activity Center in Gravette was awarded the “Arkansas Senior Center Best Practice Award” at the recent 30th annual Aging Conference held in Hot Springs.

The award came from the Division of Aging & Adult Services and Senior Programs of Arkansas (SPARK) and recognizes innovative programming and senior citizen projects that impact senior citizens.

Mary Kay Kelley, Centerdirector, accepted the award. She explained the program that resulted in the recognition:

“National Read a Book Month is a great opportunity for the Senior Center to be involved in an intergenerational activity. This year in conjunction with National Read a Book Month, the celebration took place in March and celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss with students from Margaret Martin’s class from Glenn Duffy Elementary School reading Dr. Seuss books to the seniors. After reading, the students ate lunch with their senior partners and were presented with Dr. Seuss certificates of achievement with their names on them.

“The Billy V. Hall Senior Activity Center thanks Mr. Zane Vanderpool, Principal, and Miss Margaret Martin, teacher at Glenn Duffy Elementary, for their annual participation. Any senior center can partner with a local school in their area both to show how important literacy is and also to make a difference in a young person’s life!,” Kelley said.
