Lady Pioneers starting strong

GENTRY - The Lady Pioneers (3-0) came away with a confidence-building win Friday in non-conference play against Rogers Heritage.

Gentry jumped ahead in the first quarter, 8-4, and added to that lead in the second and third quarters, coming into the final quarter up by a score of 37-19 .

Rogers Heritage picked up 11 to Gentry’s 6 in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough. Gentry came away with a 43-30 victory.

Senior Terra Jones was the high scorer in the game with 20 points, followed byLoren Cripps with 9 and Kendra Speer with 7.

The Lady Pioneers picked up a big win over Elkins on Nov. 16 in Gentry.

The Lady Pioneers outscored the Lady Elks in every quarter, taking the lead early on and never looking back.

Gentry led by nine at half time, but got several easy transition baskets in the third quarter to take control.

Kendra Boyd converted a pair of lay-ups on long outlet passes after Elkins misses. Courtney Millsap, who led all scorers, also had a pair of steals and lay-ups.

Millsap’s second lay-up pushed Gentry’s lead to 43-22 with under 2 minutes left in the quarter.

The Lady Pioneers' defense forced nine third-quarter turnovers and 30 through three quarters, using tough full-court man-to-man pressure.

Courtney Millsap was Gentry’s high scorer with 18 points, including two 3-pointers.

Terra Jones picked up 9, and Loren Cripps and Kendra Speer each added another 8 points.

The Lady Pioneers were scheduled to play Decatur at Decatur on Tuesday, after press time.
