— The senior high Bulldogs lost their first home game of the season, while the junior high team continued their winning streak.

Decatur’s junior high team won Thursday’s game at Johnson County Westside by a score of 36-0, according to head coach Stan Ellis.

Mario Urquidi, Victor Urquidi, Alan Castaneda and Steven Buckmaster all scored during the game.

“Defensively, we shut them down and they were not able to move the ball,” Ellis said.

Friday’s senior high game against Westside - the first home game of the season - was another story.

The Bulldogs made several mistakes early in the game that lead to a 26-0 loss for Decatur, Ellis said. There were five turnovers in the first half of the game and several fumbles.

Corey Holt had 13 carries for 118 yards and 1 touchdown and returned an interception for another to lead Johnson County Westside past Decatur.

Holt scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter, and returned an interception 45 yards for another score.

Taylor Houston added a 2-yard run for Westside, and Austin Ouellette hit Gump Mainard with a 12-yard touchdown pass.

“Defensively, we held them pretty well but we gave 18 points to the offense from turnovers,” Ellis said.

The second half of the game went much better for Decatur. The team came back on the field refocused and shut down Westside for the rest of the game, Ellis said.

“In general it was a pretty tough loss. They were much better matched than some of the teams we played. Had things gone a little better early on we may have been able to pull it out,” he said.

The senior high Bulldogs have five more home games in the season. They will face Conway Christian on Friday in a non-conference home game. Ellis said he expects Conway Christian to be a tough opponent. It is one of the better teams in the state with a very explosive offense, he said.

Decatur’s homecoming game will be on Oct. 15 against Western Yell County.
