Hornets fall to Tigers

Colcord, Commerce game remains close until last quarter

— COMMERCE, Okla. - The Colcord Hornets fell to the Commerce Tigers 35-14 in a game that was much closer than the score leads on.

The game was tied at 14 midway through the third quarter until Commerce scored the game’s final three touchdowns to take the Distict 8-2A game.

Colcord (3-2, 1-1) received the ball to open the game but saw its drive stall at the 8-yard line and the Hornets missed a field goal.

Commerce (5-0, 2-0) then had a long drive of its own down the 3-yard line but Darwin Davis intercepted a pass to snuff out the drive as the game remained scoreless in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw both teams get on the score board. TheTigers scored first with a 6-yard run by Bryson Sullivan with 8:40 left in the half to go up 7-0.

Colcord answered on its next possession, moving the ball with runs from Davis and Sherrell.

With 1:51 left in the half on third down from the 1-yard line Caanan Sherrell took the ball over the right side, but Chris Aguilar’s PAT missed and the Hornets trailed 7-6.

The Tigers took the ball on their own 35 after the kick rolled out of bounds and used the clock and with 25 seconds left before half Kasey Ng connected to his brother Kyler Ng for a 10-yard pass into theend zone putting the Tigers ahead 14-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter both teams found the end zone again. Sherrell intercepted a Ng passand took it 55 yards for a score. On the following 2-point conversion Sherrell connected to James to tie the game at 14 with 8:13 left.

Ng connected to Sullivan for a 17 yard pass and run TD to answer the score and go back up 21-14.

Sullivan rushed for two more scores in the fourth quarter on carries of 51 and 18 yards and finished with 202 yards rushing. Austin McMain had 110 yards rushing for Commerce as the Tigers piled up 312 yards on the ground.

The Hornets rushed for 224 total yards, led by Sherrell’s 125 yards on 17 carries. Davis and Aguilar combined for 99 yards on 21 carries.

This week Colcord will host its rival Kansas in district play. Kansas comes into the game 2-3 and 1-1 in district.
