— A quilling class will be offered at the Gentry Public Library at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21.

The two hour class will be presented by Jackie Wren from Siloam Springs. Wren has been quilling for six years and has developed Card Craft Creations with many card techniques. She gives classes for individuals or groups.

A fee of $10 will be charged to participants to cover the cost of supplies.

“The only items you need to bring to class will be a ruler, tweezers and a small scissors,” Wren said. “The class will be open to the first 12 people who pre-register.

If more than 12 sign up, there will be another class offered,”

Quilling “paper filigree” is the art of creating decorative designs from thin strips of paper around a needlelike tool, then shaping those coils into intricate shapes and designs, Wren said.

“The old-age art of paper quilling has been around since the Renaissance. It almost died out at the end of the 1800s, but the settlers took quilling to America, and it experienced a revival here. Many people still have not heard of it, but with the popularity of the Internet, it is being kept alive with Quiller’s Guilds and others that enjoy paper crafts,” she said.

“If you have never seen paper quilling before, prepare to be amazed at the intricate and beautiful designs you will be able to create. People are usingthe technique in scrapbooking, cards, boxes, mats, pictures frames, jewelry and many other variousways,” Wren said.

Items are already on display at the Library.

The beginning class isdesigned to teach participants the basic tools needed for quilling and the basic shapes.

“You will make your own gift tag,” Wren said. “It is a very easy technique and you will have a lotof fun.”
